About the Essay

1. Though Gallico's piece is an essay rather than a short story, is there an incident that could serve as an inciting moment?

Yes it is inciting, when gallico asked dempsey to go a round with him.

2. List several misconceptions Gallico held about fighting before he entered the ring with Dempsey.

A light cuff on the neck or pat on the face, caressing stroke of his arm, and a little fall forward after a hard punch in the face.

3. How did Gallico's attitude as a spectator change after his encounter in the ring?

He had more respect from before his experience.

4. Gallico compares his experience in the ring to that of a man being stalked by a professional destroyer and that of a soldier in his last battle. Why do you think Gallico chose these two specific comparisons? Which of these comparisons did you think was stronger? Why?

A man being stalked by a professional destroyer because he is a regular man and dempsey is a professional fighter. It relates more to his experience and it is easier for the reader to understand.

5. Through vivid description, Gallico makes you almost feel Dempsey's blows. List three specific phrases that were especially effective in making you empathize with Gallico.

A blow to the stomach, A little fall forward after a hard punch in the face, and A quick flash of a brown arm that gives the stunning shock to the check or mouth.
